Nobody expected 2020 to be the year everything fell apart, yet here we are. Schools are a mix of virtual and in-person, many people decline to go to a store, instead opting for delivery services or internet purchases, and entertainment is largely limited to what you can get at home. Movie theaters are starting to open, but who knows if that will last. Live performance and music venues were among the first to close and will likely be among the last to open again. This means a loss of entertainment options for most of us but it also means a loss of income for many, and some venues are worried that they may not be able to come back from the shutdown due to COVID-19. Large gatherings, like you would find at places as diverse as our own Terry M. Fischer theatre to The Muny, the Pageant, Blueberry Hill, and many more throughout the region are strongly discouraged, and many venue operators are trying to figure out ways to survive.</p><p><span> </span>Additionally, musicians have been unable to play live in front of an audience since mid-March, and this is harming their ability to earn a living too. Some have taken to doing live streaming sets, either for donations or selling tickets for virtual admission to these private streams. Some larger artists have taken to streaming live shows in empty venues to raise money for charities. These large acts are certainly helping in the short term, but what will happen to the small, mom-and-pop venues that can’t host acts like this and local musicians who rely on playing gigs to get by? What happens to the technical crew, the sound and lighting techs, the stagehands, the door staff, bartenders and servers who rely on a steady stream of shows and special attractions to make a living. According to many in the industry, the future looks bleak. Venues must still pay rent for spaces that cannot hold shows or make any revenue for the owners. They cannot afford to pay their employees for not working, and while the occasional internet streamed show may help, these are few and far between, especially for bands considered national touring acts: big enough to attract a crowd nearly everywhere, but too small to sell out stadiums.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN-otwpZEvgRbb5ZPhQzh25pz1vHf2WnWdjkjKIJEnutFTzZXVhWCZoIsZnzJ8uS1S-O2vaxwFSr_2DGFlwfGi1wuik9JkA1dB2m4iN2EzxWWya0DnrOCHJnCruvkYL2grDmYA9eK7AG9n/s960/Festival+Show+at+Verizon+Wireless+Amphitheatre+2012.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="960" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN-otwpZEvgRbb5ZPhQzh25pz1vHf2WnWdjkjKIJEnutFTzZXVhWCZoIsZnzJ8uS1S-O2vaxwFSr_2DGFlwfGi1wuik9JkA1dB2m4iN2EzxWWya0DnrOCHJnCruvkYL2grDmYA9eK7AG9n/w400-h225/Festival+Show+at+Verizon+Wireless+Amphitheatre+2012.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><b style="font-weight: bold;">photo credit:</b> Paul Huddleston</span></div><p><span> </span>What can we do about it? We all enjoy music and theatre, and there is no substitute for seeing it in person, surrounded by other just as excited as you. The energy in the room is tangible, and an internet stream or zoom theatre will do for now but are poor substitutes for being “in the room where it happened” to pull a phrase from one of the biggest musicals recently, Hamilton. How can we help to make sure these venues don’t close forever? How can we make sure that when it is safe enough and all this madness is behind us, we can go see a play or listen to a live band at the local dive bar or music hall? I’d suggest visiting www.saveourstages.com as a good starting place. The website is run by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) and has venue members in every state. They are pushing for congress to give them a helping hand to weather this storm, as they are collectively responsible for hundreds of thousands of jobs and generate billions of dollars for our economy. Support them and help keep live music and theatre alive. Hopefully once this is over, we will run into each other at a show somewhere and be able to feel the collective energy of live performance again.</p><p> ________________________________________</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU12INpX1oPotDxJ5gQmUqlJw0rSrWJ4oOG1BrY0FbRia2RWvK8XDxeSz3xL2rUZXJ7ExORh4XhFzCBX-NVzqaXKdA61eMg3y4MQJ-kjjgTZXl_3Ej0avROFtB17GD5LeX31UzpqmVKtvO/s1608/Web+U_FV_386x351+Sept+2020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1463" data-original-width="1608" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU12INpX1oPotDxJ5gQmUqlJw0rSrWJ4oOG1BrY0FbRia2RWvK8XDxeSz3xL2rUZXJ7ExORh4XhFzCBX-NVzqaXKdA61eMg3y4MQJ-kjjgTZXl_3Ej0avROFtB17GD5LeX31UzpqmVKtvO/s320/Web+U_FV_386x351+Sept+2020.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>FV Forum Newspaperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15735002233991483349noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5025161563456220053.post-64125409972420414442020-09-22T12:59:00.007-05:002020-09-22T13:30:40.293-05:00"Let Them Eat Cake," a play review<p> </p><p align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: center; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Let

few years since the legalization of same-sex marriage on June 26, 2015 in the
United States under the Obama Administration. To this day, the decision is still the topic of discussion when asked if it is right for
companies to refuse service based on personal beliefs.</span></p>

in everyone’s life where they are faced with a hard decision they must make and
that is exactly the dilemma Ms. Della (Denny Dillon) is going through. When Jen
(Rigel Harris) comes to her hometown in the South with her soon-to-be wife Macy
(Dria Brown), she is met with opposition from herself and the local bakery
owner and family friend, Ms. Della. All she hoped would happen is that she would
be able to come back to open arms and a wonderful wedding cake from the bakery
she remembers so well. Being gay in America is hard enough but being judged by
everyone around you but being judged by someone so close to her weighs on Jen
terribly all the while she battles the internalized homophobia, she has grown
accustomed to. Being in New York and being in a relationship with the outgoing
and free-spirited Macy has changed how Jen sees herself. This also impacts
Della greatly because she realizes that although Jen’s choice on a partner goes
against her personal beliefs, she would rather see Jen happy no matter who she
loves.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-indent: 0.5in;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzBqYukV-Txul-mYt9UFqoncvmfb9EEFi8gzOmA5Yw-UotQCXqnuOhYrHxKbvafTHjkp-8PxuqWvYZglZ2Y6eVACD1QvnIkzpU4ANLFDWk7BQz7-0NTCzU0tq-Qn_u3tffH485KByz8vYz/s2048/Let+them+Eat+Cake++Sept+2020+blog+Della+Macy+and+Jen.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1367" data-original-width="2048" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzBqYukV-Txul-mYt9UFqoncvmfb9EEFi8gzOmA5Yw-UotQCXqnuOhYrHxKbvafTHjkp-8PxuqWvYZglZ2Y6eVACD1QvnIkzpU4ANLFDWk7BQz7-0NTCzU0tq-Qn_u3tffH485KByz8vYz/w400-h268/Let+them+Eat+Cake++Sept+2020+blog+Della+Macy+and+Jen.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Georgia; mso-fareast-font-family: Georgia;"><span face="Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: small; text-align: center;"> </span><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span face="Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; text-align: center;">Jen (Rigel Harris), Della (Denny Dillon), and Macy (Dria Brown)</span><span face="Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; text-align: center;"> </span></span></span><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><span face="Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="text-align: center;"><b>Photo credit:</b> </span><span face="Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><span>Phillip Hamer</span></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Georgia; mso-fareast-font-family: Georgia;"><br /></span><p></p>

love this play so much that I wish I had gone another time. I had the pleasure
of seeing the play before the Covid-19 pandemic took hold on everyone’s lives which
sadly forced the production to be cut short. Nevertheless, the play touched on
a lot of serious topics that also came with a side of comedy that made me love
it even more. Della longed to be on a British Baking Show and reignite the
flame she once had with her husband sparked again. The fact that Della
initially declined to make Jen’s cake even though she was about to go out of
business and the fact that her husband was becoming a stranger to her tied
together a lot of themes that needed to be addressed. Personally, I believe
this to be a recurring theme amongst some opposers of LGBTQ+ relationships. The
fact that many people have many issues themselves but continue to get in the
way of other people’s happiness just based on who they decide to date and who
they want to associate with is troubling to me in a sense. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Georgia; mso-fareast-font-family: Georgia;">The storytelling
was amazing along with the emotions portrayed on the stage because just as Macy
is a black lesbian living in America, there was a sense of frustration that was
felt in every audience member that evening. It is important to hear more
stories of those who are different from yourself so that you can get an idea of
how others think because not everyone thinks the same way you do. Being in the
audience was an amazing experience because we were so close to the actors that
you could feel and see how they were feeling up close and personally which was
even better than being further away. At the conclusion of the show, I believe
many people had to change the way they thought which is the most desirable
impact. In the end, it should be known that Love Wins always and nothing should
stop you from loving your neighbor. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
