Gremlins 3 is (finally) happening!

After years of speculation, a third entry in the cult-classic Gremlins franchise will (for sure) be hitting the big screen in the near future. Chris Columbus, screenwriter for the original Gremlins, has finalized a script for Gremlins 3 and the film is now in production at Warner.

From what information is now available, this third entry is set to be far darker in tone than the 1991 sequel. While Gremlins 2 was fairly lighthearted and whimsical, this script returns to the style of the original film. Entertainment website Slash Film interviewed Columbus regarding the script back in August. In talking with Columbus, they discovered that there is a possibility than one of the franchise’s most iconic characters may well be killed off this time.

The website suggests that one of the major questions fan have had in regards to the continuation of the plot is “…if all the gremlins come from getting Gizmo wet and feeding his mogwai offspring after midnight, should Gizmo be eliminated?”

“That (question) comes up in the movie, certainly.” Said Columbus.

Interestingly enough, Gizmo was set to die in an early version of the script for the original film. The second draft of the script features Gizmo dying and then being reincarnated as a butterfly-like creature.

The previous films in the franchise relied heavily on puppetry to bring Gizmo and the cast of green, slimy monsters to life on screen. With the popularization of CGI, some could presume that a new Gremlins film would over-use it. Columbus reassures that CGI would only be used to help simplify the shooting of certain sequences and not be the go-to effect for the cast of characters.

“CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it’s all puppets.”
